The nationwide Communist Party speaking tour to launch Britain's Road to Socialism started right here in the South West.

The event was held in the Colliton club, Dorchester, Dorset. It is the first in a series of dates across the district of South West England and Cornwall.

The public meeting was well attended and received. The meeting contained a broad section of left wing thinking. This included members of the Communist Party, Socialist Workers Party, Respect, Labour and members of the Co-operative movement.

The range of attendees “created a greater sense of unity among the left wing in Dorset” said Carl Wainwright, Dorset CPB branch secretary and organiser of the event.

The key note speaker was Robert Griffiths, General Secretary of the Communist Party. The other speakers were Paul Kimber, Councillor Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, Tim Nicholls, branch secretary of Dorset Socialists and Carl Wainwright, branch secretary of CPB Dorset.
